Show File Extensions Not Showing

I recently wrote an article about how to show file extensions however some people have followed the instructions and file extensions are not showing!  This is extremely annoying as you have gone and changed all the settings but nothing is happening and you cannot see your file extensions. I personally have not had this problem but I am going to show you where the settings should have been changed in the registry in Windows. File extensions not showing after you have changed the settings is just not on and I hope this tutorial can help you.
Please note: Editing your registry in Windows can cause your computer to crash if you do not know what you are doing, so please proceed at your own risk.

File extensions not showing – How to check the registry?

1.  Go to the start menu and type in regedit.exe. This will open the Windows registry. If you have Windows Xp you will have to choose run first, then type regedit.exe in. Or make a desktop shortcut to the registry.
2.  Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER by clicking on the arrow to the left.
3.  Now go into software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer.
4.  Now you will see the Advanced folder. Just click on this folder once and details will appear in the right pane.
5.  Double click on HideFileExt in the right column and change the value to zero.
If the value is zero it means that it will not hide file extensions and therefore they should be showing. If the value is 1 as in the screen shot then the file extensions are not going to be showing.
You can also navigate to the right spot by using search in the registry.

File extensions not showing – Create a .reg file

This is kind of what a geek would do, make a reg file to add the 0 value in.
All you have to do is open a notepad file and paste this into it:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
“HideFileExt”=dword:00000000
Then save the file as HideFileExt.reg instead of the usual text file extension. Then when you double click on that file it will add the ZERO value into your registry.

Tips for registry cleaning

Registry cleaning is one of the easiest and quickest ways to get your  PC back in shape and operating  at top speed. If done right, it’s a safe way to restore your PC’s health but if you do it without the proper knowledge, it can lead to a series of very annoying consequences like errors, crashes and blue screens. There are two ways to clean up unwanted registry entries: manually or using dedicated software, however, the first thing you want to do before you start is to make a backup of the entire registry. Even so, it can be very tiresome work because the registry is vast. Instead, it’s a good idea to check out the sites that review this kind of software and only after decide which one to use.

Usually these sites also sort out the cleaners in tops, so finding the best solution shouldn’t be a problem. Another way to avoid registry issues is to purchase a system optimizer because while focused on speeding up the computer, it will also handle registry cleaning for you. The same safety rule is applied here, so no matter how good the optimizer is, make sure you back up your registry from time to time.

It is also important to note that every time you install an application, something gets added to the registries and every time  you uninstall one, the registry entries linked to the respective application are deleted. Many of these can be found in your internet browser, for example toolbars or additional search engine options, so next time you install a program, make sure to uncheck the tickboxes that permit these kind of applications to be installed. How to Clean the Registry With CCleaner.

The Windows Registry maintains user settings on a PC. The information in the Registry includes data from using the operating system as well as third-party applications. A simplistic interpretation of how the Registry records your data is as follows: "change something and that action gets registered." By that logic, when users remove or uninstall programs, those changes should also happen in the Registry. Unfortunately, software removal actions are not always complete, causing obsolete entries to stay behind in the register. The CCleaner application includes functionality that helps users rein in those wayward and lost registry entries.

Instructions.

1. Open CCleaner. Click the "Registry" button in the left pane of the window.
2. Place a check in any unmarked boxes in the center pane that is labeled "Registry Cleaner." Otherwise, selectively check and uncheck boxes for registry entries that should and should not be removed.
3. Click "Scan For Issues." Watch the green progress bar until it reads "100%."
4. Click the "Fix Select Issues" button, opening another dialog box. Choose the "Fix All Selected Issues" button.
5. Monitor the second dialog box that is hovering above the main CCleaner box. After cleaning is complete, the box will state "Issued Fix." Click "Close" and then exit CCleaner.

How to Find a Good Windows Registry Cleaner.

3. Buy the jv16 PowerTools program from Macecraft Software if you are looking for a program that not just cleans your computer's registry, but also manages and sorts the registry.
