Lionel Andrés Messi (born June 24, 1987 in Rosario) is an Argentine football (soccer) player.

Lionel Messi started playing football at a very early age in his hometown's Newell's Old Boys. From the age of 11, he suffered from a hormone deficiency and as Lionel's parents were unable to pay for the treatment in Argentina, they decided to move to Barcelona, Spain.

In the 2003-2004 season, when he was still only 16, Messi made his first team debut in a friendly with Porto that marked the opening of the new Dragao stadium. The following championship-winning season, Messi made his first appearance in an official match on October 16, 2004, in Barcelona's derby win against Espanyol at the Olympic Stadium (0-1).

With several first team players seriously injured, the services of several reserve team players were called upon, and Messi became a regular feature of Barça squads. On May 1, 2005, he became the youngest player ever to score a league goal for FC Barcelona - against Albacete when Messi was only 17 years, 10 months and 7 days old.

 He was offered the chance to play for the Spain national football team, but declined, prefering to wait for the opportunity to play for the country of his birth. In June 2004 he got his chance, playing in a U-20 friendly match against Paraguay.

On September 25, 2005 Messi obtained a Spanish citizenship and was finally able to make his debut in this season's Spanish First Division. He had previously been unable to play because FC Barcelona had filled up all of their quota of non-EU players.

Messi's first outing in the UEFA Champions League at the Nou Camp was on Sept 28 against Italian club Udinese. He impressed with some great passing and a seemingly telepathic relationship with Ronaldinho that earned him a standing ovation from the 70,000-odd Nou Camp faithful. On December of that year, the Italian newspaper Tuttosport awarded him the Golden Boy 2005 title for the best under-21 player in Europe, over Wayne Rooney and Lukas Podolski

The outstanding player of his generation, Zinedine Zidane led France to World Cup glory in 1998 and to the European Championship in 2000. Diego Armando Maradona won the 1986 World Cup almost single-handedly and took Argentina to the final four years later. He also took unfancied Napoli to its only two Italian titles. Maradona was controversially voted best player of all time in an internet poll held by FIFA, much to the chagrin of Pelé and his fans, who contended that an internet poll was bound to attract relatively young voters. People that would have seen Maradona play, but not Pelé. Truth be told, the title of greatest ever player was probably a bit too much credit. However, no one would surely deny Maradona was the best ever dribbler of the bal. He proved as much, when he scored what was arguably the greatest ever World Cup goal in 1986. Maradona picked up the ball on the halfway line and promptly proceeded to leave half the England team for dead before slotting the ball into the net. That game was also the one in which he scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal. The incident soiled Maradona's reputation. All the more so, because he repeatedly refused to admit openly to handling the ball. In the nineties his career hit a downward trajectory. He was suspended when he tested positive in a for doping after a match between Napoli and Bari in 1990, and again when he tested positive at the 1994 World Cup. After his retirement from football, his life has been marred by drugs abuse, weight issues and heart problems.

Ask football fans to name the best ever footballer, and chances are they will come up with the name Pelé, even if they are too young to have ever seen him play. It speaks volumes about the strength of the legend that has sprung up around the famous Brazilian forward. Does that mean the choice is unfounded? Not really. With three World Cups to his name, and a total career tally of more than twelve hundred goals, there can be no doubting Pelé's pedigree. Pelé(2) was born under the name Edson Arantes do Nascimento in the village Três Corações, the son of a footballer known as Dondinho, who's career was thwarted by a bad knee. He grew up in poverty in the town of Bauru in the province of São Paulo. As a boy Pelé helped alleviate the family's financials woes by cleaning shoes at the local train station.(3) He started playing football in the streets, using a stocking stuffed with rags and paper as a ball. In 1954 Pelé was picked to play in the newly founded youth team of the club his father had played for, Bauru Athletic Club. Things were handled professionally, Pelé received a playing fee and the team was coached by the former Brazilian international Waldemar de Brito, who played for Brazil during the 1934 World Cup.(4) In school Pelé performed abysmally, and was held back three times, but on the football field his star was rising. It wasn't long before clubs started to show an interest in the talented young striker. Following the advice of Waldemar de Brito, Pelé opted to join Santos CF, a successful football club from the coastal town of the same name. Santos played in the Paulista, the league centred around São Paulo. Pelé played his first official for Santos at the age of sixteen.(5) That year he immediately made his mark, scoring 36 goals in 29 matches. The next season Pelé was even more impressive, scoring 58 goals in 38 matches. Pelé going past an opponent during the 1958 World Cup His overwhelming debut as a professional footballer quickly resulted in a place in the Brazilian national team and a spot in the seleção for the 1958 World Cup. A knee injury prevented him form participating in the first two games of the tournament, but in the final match of the group stage, against the Soviet Union, Pelé made his World Cup debut. He failed to score a goal in that game, but in the matches that followed the young forward asserted himself. He scored the only goal in the quarter final match against Wales, a hat-trick in the semi final against France, and two more goals in the final against Sweden. Aged seventeen, he was (and is) the youngest World Cup winner in history. Pelé was quick, strong, a good header and dribbler of the ball, but above all, he possessed a powerful and accurate strike in both legs. The avalanche of goals he produced for Santos, where he teamed up with fellow internationals like Zito and Carlos Alberto, helped the club win a string of trophies. They won the Brazilian national championship, the Taça Brasil, five times in a row, from 1961 to 1965. In 1962 and 1963 the club won the Copa Libertadores, followed both times by victory in the Intercontinental Cup, beating Eusebio's Benfica and Gianni Rivera's AC Milan respectively. Pelé in action for the Yellow Canaries There was little joy for Pelé at World Cups in the 1960's. In 1962 he was injured out of the tournament early on, and had to watch as a spectator how his team-mates successfully defended their title, with Garincha playing the starring role in his absence. In 1966 the World Cup ended in a bitter disappointment, as the reigning champions crashed out in the group stage of the tournament. Bitterly disappointed, Pelé decided to end his international career. His retirement from the intentional stage would last for two years, but as the 1970 Wold Cup drew nearer, Pelé, who scored his thousandth goal as a footballer in 1969(6) , changed his mind and returned to the seleção.(7) He would not live to regret his decision. The 1970 Brazilian national team is regarded by many as the best ever national team. Playing a swinging and attack-minded form of samba-football, they captured Brazil's third World Cup. Starring roles were played by the likes of Carlos Alberto, Gerson, Jairzinho, Tostão, Rivelino, and of course Pelé. In the final of the tournament Italy were hopelessly outclassed and had to concede four goals, in spite of their defensive approach to the game. The emphatic 1970 World Cup triumph gave Pelé to end his international career on a high note. He played his last game for Brazil in the summer of 1971, against Yugoslavia in Rio's Maracanã stadium. Pele as a football ambassador in the USA In 1974, at the age of 34 years old, Pelé decided that the time had come to hang up his boots all together. But his retirement from football would prove to be short lived. A year later Pelé, motivated in part by financial problems he found himself in at the time, decided to come out of retirement. He accepted an offer to join New York Cosmos, one of the clubs that formed the famous North American Soccer League.(8) In the NASL Pelé earned a salary that could only have dreamed about during his years with Santos. He repaid the league by playing the role of goodwill ambassador for football in the United States to perfection. On October 1st, 1977, in front of a 75,000 strong crowd(9) , Pelé played his last match, a game between New York Cosmos and Santos, with the great man playing a half for each team. This time his retirement as a player would prove permanent. New York Cosmos had won the NASL that year, so that 'O Rei' could leave the club scene just as he had left the international scene, with his head held high. It was the end of a career that, if friendlies are included, saw him score 1283 goals in 1367 matches.(10) After his retirement Pelé has continued playing the role of goodwill ambassador for football. He was also Brazilian minister for Sport for a while.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the son of Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro (a cooker) and José Dinis Aveiro (a Municipal gardener). Many say that Ronaldo's humble family origins are the reason why CR7 manages to deal so well with the fame and spotlights he has nowadays. Cristiano Ronaldo has two older sisters, Liliana Cátia and Elma, and one older brother, Hugo.

Cristiano Ronaldo first steps in football/soccer were made in his amateur hometown club called Andorinha, when he was still 8 years old. Those 30 minutes are probably still in the memory of many Manchester United fans, since CR7 stunned everyone in the stadium and impressed the traditional harsh English media, with his dazzling dribbles and runs over the wing. Ronaldo scored his first goal for Manchester United, by taking a curled free kick, in a 3-0 win against Portsmouth, in November 2003. However, and despite several promising starts, Cristiano Ronaldo's first two seasons in Manchester United received mixed reviews. He got praised for his technique and skills, but he often got criticised for lacking consistency and poor decision making on the field, which seems to be a natural thing at the age of 17 and 18.

In the year of 2005, Cristiano Ronaldo's father, José Dinis Aveiro, died of an alcoholism liver disease. Ronaldo was 20 years old and that was one of his most difficult moments of his life. CR7 is said to not drink any alcohol as a consequence of what happened with his father.

Regarding the Portuguese National Team, Cristiano Ronaldo made his senior debut against Kazakhstan a few weeks later, just after being signed by Manchester United, in a match played in August 2003. CR7's first biggest tournament was the Euro 2004, organized by Portugal and Ronaldo managed to help his team reaching the finals, but ended up by being defeated by Greece. English fans showed CR7 how much they got upset with the World Cup elimination and started insulting and "booing" Cristiano Ronaldo on every match outside Old Trafford. That situation made CR7 think about leaving England and Manchester United. However, Sir Alex Ferguson managed to convince him to stay and, against all odds, Cristiano Ronaldo surprised everyone with a great season in the English Premiership League. Ronaldo was quoted saying: "All the boos and insults just motivate me training harder and playing better".

In 2007, Cristiano Ronaldo won the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year Award and was also voted Footballer of the Year, by the Football Writers Association. That same year and for the first time, Ronaldo also made up to the top 3 finalists for both the FIFA World Player of the Year trophy and the European Player of the Year award. Cristiano Ronaldo kept on his outstanding form in the 2007-2008 season and scored 42 goals in all competitions (31 in the English Premier League), allowing him to be voted again for the PFA Player of The Year and the Football Writers Footballer of the Year. CR7 rising performances allowed Manchester United to win two titles that season, those being the English Premier League and also the UEFA Champions League trophy, in which Ronaldo scored a goal in the final, after a superb header.

The 2008 year was definately Cristiano Ronaldo glory year at Manchester United and after having won the UEFA Champions League, Ronaldo won the FIFA World Player of the Year (2008) and the European Player of the Year (2008). In the 2008-2009 season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored another 26 goals, which helped Manchester United to win another English Premier League title and reaching again the final of the UEFA Champions League, in which they ended by losing against Barcelona this time, by 0-2.

In 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo broke another record by becoming the World's most expensive football player, after transfering from Manchester United to Real Madrid in July 2009, in a £80 million pounds transfer (around 94 million euros and 132 million US dollars). That was an historic moment, and more than 80 000 fans received and welcomed Cristiano Ronaldo in the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, during his official presentation. Ronaldo's career in Real Madrid started well, scoring plenty of goals on his first matches and only getting stopped by his first injury, in October 2009. However, CR7 recovered his form a few months later and still managed to score 33 goals on his first season playing for Real Madrid, which unfortunately, didn't prove to be enough for the club to win any trophies in the 2009-2010 season.

As for the Portuguese National Team, Cristiano Ronaldo captained Portugal at the 2010 FIFA World Cup played in South Africa, but the "Lusitanos" got eliminated in the last 16, against the future World Champions, Spain, getting defeated by 1-0.

In the 3rd of July, 2010, Cristiano Ronaldo announced on his facebook page that he had become a father. The information shocked many fans since there's still a big mistery nowadays, on who is the mother of the Cristiano Ronaldo's son. CR7 requested privacy and named his son with his own name, Cristiano Ronaldo Junior. The child is currently in Ronaldo's full custody, while being helped by his mother and sisters.

In the 2010-2011 season, Cristiano Ronaldo had an outstanding personal performance, breaking several all-time records, not only in Real Madrid, but also in the Spanish League. Ronaldo scored 41 goals in La Liga, breaking the previous 38 goal record set by Hugo Sanchez and Telmo Zarra. CR7 scored a total of 54 goals and once again, won the Golden Boot award, beating Lionel Messi in the way, who finished the season with 53 goals. However, not everything was perfect, since Real Madrid only won the Copa del Rey and failed to conquer the Spanish League and the UEFA Champions League.
